The open days of the Regional Archive in Alkmaar can safely be called successful. They deal with the image of boring, yellowed documents that are gathering dust. Of course there are documents, but also many other things that you expect to see right away, such as computer games.

Last Saturday's open day paid the necessary attention to the so-called retro games such as Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Games that, thanks to carefully preserved game computers and old televisions, could actually be played. "An excellent opportunity to show how we used to play instead of on a Playstation", says one of the visitors. "I find it very funny to see what the games used to look like," said a young visitor.

"It's a way to introduce people to the archive in a low-threshold way, because most people don't know the archive at all." explains Mark Aphenaar of the Regional Archive. "And of course we are normally closed on weekends". In addition to the retro games, the age-old documents could count on the necessary attention and restoration work was carried out on the spot. Even those who wanted to know more about the correct storage of papers, books, photos or other "analogue" material could go to the restorers for tips.
